Two fake medical doctors have been arrested for operating illegal medical outfits and killing a pregnant girl, Miss Onyemachi Onwuloro, 17, during an unsuccessful caesarian section.
Two fake medical doctors have been arrested for operating illegal medical outfits and killing a pregnant girl, Miss Onyemachi Onwuloro, 17, during an unsuccessful caesarian section.
The suspects, Mr. Agha Phat, 43, a native of Mgbelle, in Oguta council area of Imo state, and Mr. John Odumukwu, 55, a native of Nkwoegwu, in Umuahia North council area of Abia state, were yesterday, paraded at Zone 9 Police Headquarters, Umuahia, the Abia state capital.
Addressing newsmen, Mr. Olusegun Efuntayo, AIG of the zone, said the arrest of the duo was made possible because of a tip-off given in confidence to some officers of the anti-trafficking section.
When quizzed, the suspects admitted that the late Miss Onyemachi, who hailed from Umuodu Okpuala, in Ngor Okpala council area of Imo state, was their patient, but alleged that she died due to lack of blood and not because of the operation she underwent.
One of them, Phat, said he has been practising medicine for the past 15 years. The proprietor, New Life Hospital, located at Nkwoala Market Square in Eziama, Ngor Okpala LGA, disclosed that although he did not go through any formal medical school before he started his medical practice, he had a stint in Lagos, under a German doctor, as a theatre attendant.
In his own statement, John told newsmen that he was a graduate of Pan African College of Homoeopathic Medicine and that the late Miss Onyemachi was first admitted at his medical outfit, called Divine Light Hospital, at Nkwoala Market Square, before she was referred to Phat for surgical operation. Meanwhile, the police said the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
