MBI Shut, Workers Held Hostage

A tussle between the owners and managers of Minaj Broadcast International (MBI), yesterday, led to the closure of the TV station.

A tussle between the owners and managers of Minaj Broadcast International (MBI), yesterday, led to the closure of the TV station.

The crisis, which first broke out on Monday, saw policemen locking several staff inside the stationís Lagos office, from the night till yesterday morning.

Eme Akware, an employee of the station, told P.M.News that some policemen stormed the station at about 7.30 p.m., on Monday, and locked the entrance to the premises, thus preventing people from either coming in or going out.

According to him, the police claimed that they were acting on the orders of the owners, and only there to maintain law and order. When P.M.News visited yesterday, the staff were seen standing in front of the station in groups, discussing about the development.

The crisis, P.M.News learnt, is a fallout of the tango between the Senator Mike Ajeigbo owned-outfit and Global Plus, the company contracted to manage it for five years.

Global Plus, owned by Christ Embassy, and the stationís owners had reportedly been engaged in a battle over who controls affairs at the broadcast outfit.

The matter reportedly worsened on Monday, when the wife of the former senator, involved in the running of the station, ordered that a programme be broadcast, but the Global Plus team allegedly declined and seized the tape.

After spirited efforts to retrieve the tape failed, it was learnt that the woman invited the police from the Olosan Police station, Mushin, and ordered the closure of the station.

P.M.News gathered that the ex-senator contracted the station to Global Plus to manage for five years and has only done so for two and a half years before the duo reportedly started having differences over the terms of agreement of the partnership.
