The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Adeboye Olatunji, for allegedly killing his 60-year-old aunt, popularly called Iya Ibeji.
The suspect was said to have strangled the woman for failing to disclose his father's whereabouts. P.M.News gathered that the woman was found dead at her 5, Olusola Street, Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Ogun state, residence, after a row with the suspect.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had engaged the woman in a long running battle over the ownership of the property left behind by his father. He reportedly accused the deceased of denying him his share of his father's property.
'I was living with my mother, in Ibadan. I asked her about my father's whereabouts and she brought me to Abeokuta, to meet Iya Ibeji, my father's elder sister.
'My mother assured that Iya Ibeji would tell me everything about my father. So, we came to Abeokuta. My mother slept in the house that night, and returned to Ibadan the next day. When I asked my aunt about my father, she refused to tell me anything about him. But my mother had told me to put pressure on her.
'On the second day, my aunt still refused to tell me anything about my father,' he stated. Police sources said the suspect blamed his action on unseen forces. 'It was about 4 p.m., on the fateful day. I was in the house when I noticed that everywhere around me became dark, like it was about to rain. The colour of my eyes changed instantly and I started looking for Iya Ibeji.
'I found her at the backyard feeding her sheep. I waited until she finished. When she eventually came to the passage, I watched her turn her back and quietly, I tip-toed behind her, tied a piece of cloth around her neck and tightened it. She screamed and fought but I overpowered and killed her,' he narrated.
On why he killed his aunt, Olatunji said he was not happy with her and believes she did not want to tell him about his father's whereabouts so that she would retain the ownership of his father's house. He added that killing her was not intentional.
The murder suspect said he later got to know of his father's whereabouts after he had killed his aunt. 'Neighbours who were attracted by her screaming arrived the scene and I told them that I killed her because she refused to tell me about my father's whereabouts.
'It was one of the neighbours, a man, who told me my father actually died in prison while serving a jail term,' he said. The Ogun State Police Spokesman, Sunday Ubua, said the suspect would be charged to court at the completion of their investigation.
