Tension In Ilaro Over Obaship Stool

Tension is mounting in Ilaro, Ogun state, over the choice of a 77-year-old prince, Adedeji Onigbenle, as the new Olu of Ilaro.

Tension is mounting in Ilaro, Ogun state, over the choice of a 77-year-old prince, Adedeji Onigbenle, as the new Olu of Ilaro.

P.M.News learnt that youths of the town, under the aegis of Ilaro Youths Association, who are opposed to the choice of Prince Adegbenle as successor to the late paramount head of Ilaro, Oba Adekanbi Tella, are spoiling for war.

Following the demise of the former ruler, last February, succession to the throne has been dogged by controversy. Investigations revealed that the kingmakers and some elders in the ancient city had beefed up security in the town, especially around the residence of Prince Onigbenle.

P.M.News gathered that the youths blamed the Adele (acting) Olu of Ilaro, Prince Jas Oyekan, and a prominent politician from the town, Chief Tunji Otegbeye, for allegedly using the name of the Ogun state governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, to impose the Olu-elect on the kingmakers.

Though the coronation date for the installation of the Oba is yet to be fixed, the youths are said to be keeping vigil, waiting for a move by the kingmakers to crown Prince Onigbenle as the new Olu of Ilaro. P.M.News investigations also revealed that, apart from Ilaro town, there is a heavy police presence at Papa area of Ogun state.
