The Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) has declared that oil and gas cannot make Nigeria great, but agriculture and manufacturing can.
Chairman of Ikeja branch of MAN, Mr. Godwin Oteri, also warned on the dangers of overdependence on hydrocarbon. Oteri explained at a forum held in Lagos that the only sectors experiencing boom now are finance, trading, oil and gas sectors. He argued that these cannot grow the nation's economy.
'These sectors, I tell you lack the capacity to move the teeming population of Nigeria out of poverty,' he said. According to Oteri, for traders, bankers and oil and gas experts, the economy has been favourable, but not manufacturers. The MAN boss stressed the need for immediate return to agriculture and manufacturing.
'In an economy, there are two strong hubs that hold sway. They are agriculture and manufacturing. Those are what make a country great, not oil and gas exploration and production,' he declared.
