A new satellite device that will help motorists and travellers locate any street and road in Lagos state, without being guided by anyone, has been launched in Lagos and the state government is buying into the project.

The satellite navigation device, tagged Naija Navigator, was brought to the Nigerian market by Toroseda Technology Consulting (Nig.) Ltd. The device would enable people to get precise directions to their desired destination. 'They just put in the street or name of the place they want to go and a voice and visual cues direct them, letting them know when to turn left or right.
'It is like having a local in the car who knows the area like the back of their hands, except that all this knowledge is compressed and contained in a simple marvel of modern technology,' stated a brief from Toroseda Technology. Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, at the launch of the new device, said the device would bring innovative satellite technology to the Nigerian market, working with the best-in-class technology and data partners to produce the best products and service.
'I find the presentation timely and apt at a period when the challenges of modern day governance require the co-operation and participation of stakeholders in the delivery of facilities and amenities to the people,' said Fashola, whose speech was read by his Senior Special Assistant on Information Technology, Mr. Bola Banire.
Fashola stated that modern day governance, particularly in an urban setting, was becoming electronic each passing day as advances in information technology grow geometrically in direct proportion to the pressing and challenging issues of social and economic development.
'The use of satellite navigation will assist in providing turn by turn navigation for all roads in Nigeria,' he said. It is expected that with the satellite navigation, people no longer need to rely solely on drivers' direction, take security risks by asking okada men or strangers for direction.
The device will help a motorist to drive with confidence and safety wherever one needs to go, and feel free to explore Nigeria without the possibility of getting lost. Satellite navigation contains a GPS receiver which receives signals from GPS satellites. The coordinates are then converted into actual points on a map with the street names or point of interest near ones destination. This would be displayed on the device.
