An anti-corruption group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, this morning, stormed the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to protest against a statement credited to Mrs. Farida Waziri, the commission's boss, that she could not locate files on 31 former governors and immediate past president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
An anti-corruption group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, this morning, stormed the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to protest against a statement credited to Mrs. Farida Waziri, the commission's boss, that she could not locate files on 31 former governors and immediate past president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
The chairman of CACOL, Mr. Debo Adeniran, told journalists that he was personally disturbed by the statement even after CACOL submitted a petition against Obasanjo on 12 November, 2007.
A statement released during the protest read: 'CACOL read with trepidation and disappointment the statement credited to you that you could not locate all case files on the 31 former governors indicted during the term of your predecessor, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and that you have no petition against the immediate past president, Olusegun Obasanjo.
'Although it has been said that you are continuing the prosecution of some of the indicted former governors, we find it difficult to believe that you indeed uttered the statement on petition against former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
'Given the credential of experience ascribed to you as a retired high ranking police officer, it leaves us with no room to doubt that your experience in public office, especially in bureaucracy, is minimal.'
The protesters sang songs and carried placards, calling on EFCC to immediately arrest and prosecute Obasanjo. They marched from Falomo overhead bridge to the EFCC office, located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. The protest was still ongoing as at press time.
