A gang of armed robbers which specialises in robbing their victims with sticks designed like rifles has been smashed by the police.
The suspects identified as Anayo Ebube, 25; Emeka Kudenta, 28; Sunday Agwu, 22 and Victor Kama, 27, were arrested by policemen on patrol, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, while on their way to an operation at Shagamu, Ogun state.
The suspects, P.M.News gathered, were arrested on their motorcycles with the sticks designed as rifles. They are currently cooling their heels at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta.
Police spokesman in Ogun state, Sunday Ubua, confirmed the story. 'During interrogation, they confessed that they are robbers on their way to rob motorists on Sagamu road and that they operate with sticks designed like rifles and torches on the road.
'They confessed that they were eight in number and that they had been operating there for many years,' Ubua stated.
One of the suspects, Victor Kama, denied being a member of the gang. 'I don't know these boys. I only boarded their motorcycle at the Redeemed Camp, on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. I actually boarded a bus from Ojota and I came down at the Redemption camp when I noticed a heavy traffic on the road. I decided to take a commercial motorcycle to continue my journey to Sagamu.
'As we were going, the policemen who were on patrol duty in the area stopped us and searched the motorcycle that I mounted. They found some incriminating items and that was how we were arrested and taken to the station. I never knew they were robbers until the search,' said Kama, who could not say where he was going in Sagamu. Contrary to his claims, other members of the gang insisted that they knew him and that he was a member of the gang.
