House Of Reps Moves To Stop Rejection Of Corps Members

The House of Representatives is seeking to review the NYSC Act of 1973 in order to prescribe sanctions for organisations that reject Corps members posted to them for primary assignment.

The House of Representatives is seeking to review the NYSC Act of 1973 in order to prescribe sanctions for organisations that reject Corps members posted to them for primary assignment.

The motion seeks to make it illegal for government agencies to reject Corps members.

Hon. Woma Gorima stated this in a motion, supported by 32 other members on the floor of the House of Representatives, yesterday.

He advocated that government agencies that reject the services of Corps members should be sanctioned.

The members wondered how government's objective of the NYSC can be achieved if government agencies do not accept Corps members posted to their establishments for primary assignment.

In adopting the motion, the House unanimously resolved to strengthen the NYSC and help it surmount its present challenges and achieve greater standards.

The House also advised NYSC officials to liaise with prospective employers during orientation, to ascertain their staff needs before posting Corps members to them.

A cross-section of Corps members spoken to, applauded the House, urging it to amend the Act quickly and assuage the pains and stigma associated with rejection, which corps members go through.

They also called on the House to beam their searchlight on improving Corps members' allowances and working conditions.
