A naval rating, attached to the Naval Unit, Abuja has being dismissed for stealing N870, 000, belonging to his boss.
The rating, who was attached to the officer, as a driver and personal aid, was said to have carried out the act, after stealing the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card belonging to the officer and made the illegal withdrawal.
The dismissed rating (names withheld), was said to have been attached to the officer who was said to have been newly posted to Abuja. He served as tour guide to the officer and showed him all the important places in Abuja. He was said to have performed his duty diligently.
Apart for serving the officer as his official driver, the rating also worked as his boss' domestic servant. He ran errands for him and automatically won a space in the heart of the officer. However, unknown to the senior officer his boy had a mission to accomplish.
Saturday Sun gathered that the officer, having ran out of money one day, asked his boy to take him to the nearest Zenith Bank ATM to make some withdrawals. On their way to the bank, a heavy rain started, forcing them to turn back home to pick an umbrella. When they eventually arrived the bank, the driver accompanied his boss to the ATM machine and stood while the officer made the withdrawal. He was said to have memorized the number, as his boss punched them after which he started making withdrawals from the account.
This went on for long without the officer knowing until needed some money. When he went to withdraw money the machine told him he had no money in his account. He contacted his accounts officer at the bank, who confirmed that withdrawals had made in the past. The officer denied making more than one withdrawal. A statement of account was eventually printed out for him. Also, the photograph of his driver, captured by the ATM was shown him.
He officer promptly reported the crime to the naval authorities, who immediately arrested the naval rating.
