Jigawa Earmarks N7 Billion for Stadium Construction

Sports and youth development may soon have a boost in Jigawa, as the State government said yesterday that it would earmark N7 billion for the construction of an Olympic size stadium in Dutse.

Sports and youth development may soon have a boost in Jigawa, as the State government said yesterday that it would earmark N7 billion for the construction of an Olympic size stadium in Dutse.

Alhaji Aminu Muhammad, the State Commissioner for Sports, told news men in Abuja, that the project would be captured in the 2009 budget.

"Government has acquired a site and will start building the Olympic size stadium for all sporting activities.

"Even before then, we have already earmarked N45 million to upgrade three stadia in Hadejia, Birnin Kudu and Gumel; work has started in Hadejia while the rest will begin next week," Muhammad said.

He also said contract for the facilities had been approved and would be signed next week, adding that government placed priority on sports and youth development.

"Since the inception of this government, we started putting all the necessary infrastructure in place to enhance sports and youth development," he said.

On the state's build-up to the 16th National Sports Festival, Muhammad explained that government had released about N15 million for the fiesta.

"Jigawa is set for the Festival because our athletes will soon start camping in Zaria and our mission is to haul medals for the State."

The Commissioner said the State-owned Jigawa Golden Stars FC would be returned to the Premier League this season, after its relegation to the pro-league.

"We are working hard to actualise this," he said.
