The police claimed victory Sunday as two suspects were arrested in battle with armed robbers who stormed two banks in Lagos.
Two suspects were said to have been caught at about 3 am inside the Omegabank branch at Ogba, but the police could only recover 74 spent shells fired from high caliber rifles used by the bandits that stormed the Maroko branch of Oceanic Bank.
According to police accounts, the armed robbers numbering about 20 had arrived the Oceanic Bank in Jeeps at about 12 midnight. They were able to break into the bank and were still battling to break into the strong room, when the newly established Anti-Bank Robbery Squad arrived at the scene in a newly refurbished armoured personnel carrier.
Police spokesman, DSP Olubode Ojajuni said the robbers were dislodged before they could accomplish their mission at the two banks that came under attack.
"Both robberies were foiled," Ojajuni said.
According to him, the robbers who were keeping watch outside the Acme Road, Ogba branch of Omegabank had no time to adequately alert members of the gang who were busy inside. And the police were lucky to catch two of the suspects, who are now helping them in their investigations.
