Man Docked For Stealing Police Officer's $2,000


A 28-year-old man, Uchenna Ijike, has been docked at an Ikeja Senior Magistrate's Court on a three-count charge of assaulting a police officer while in uniform and stealing his $2,000.

A 28-year-old man, Uchenna Ijike, has been docked at an Ikeja Senior Magistrate's Court on a three-count charge of assaulting a police officer while in uniform and stealing his $2,000.

The prosecutor, Inspector L. O. Mamah, alleged that Uchenna assaulted Joseph Karide, a Superintendent of Police (SP), at Area G, Ogba, Ikeja, on 24 September, knocked him to the ground.

According to the police, Uchenna also stole the sum of $2,000 (about N264,000) from the policeman on the same date, time and place, contrary to and punishable under Sections 356, 249 and 390 of the Criminal Code Cap 17 Vol. II laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

When the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty. Presiding Magistrate, A. A. Adefulire, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in the like sum. The surety, he ordered must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 10, or a community leader who must be a high chief. The case was adjourned till 1 December, 2008, for mention.
