The Enugu State Police Command has declared four persons involved in baby manufacturing and sale, in the state, wanted.
They include Mrs Mamere, said to be the kingpin in child trafficking business, Dr. Ani Innocent, Dr. Nwachukwu and Mrs. Chizoba Eneh, matron of Chief Dennis Okafor Memorial Hospital, Ugwu Odogwu area of Enugu.
The state Police Commissioner, Sani Magaji, disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the command's headquarters Enugu. Seven pregnant girls and two sons of the owner of the hospital, Obinna and Ugochukwu Okafor, were paraded before newsmen. The police boss told journalists that over 20 babies have been delivered and sold by the hospital.
Nemesis caught up with the baby merchants when a victim, Ifeoma Eze, from Effium in Ebonyi state, escaped from the baby factory and, through a good Samaritan, went to the government-owned Park Lane Hospital, Enugu.
On getting there, she reported the matter to a nurse, Esther Ogbonna, who also contacted her colleague in Chief Denis Okafor Memorial Hospital and that nurse identified the escapee- Ifeoma Eze.
Security operatives then arrested the traffickers when they came to force Ifeoma back to their enclave. According to the commissioner, effort is being made to arrest the other suspects at large and later hand them over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related offences [NAPTIP] for prosecution after investigation.
Another baby merchant in the coal city, Dr. Kenneth Akunne, arrested some months back along with 20 pregnant girls for running an illegal baby factory, is currently being prosecuted by NAPTIP before the Enugu Federal Court.
