Federal Road Safety Commission To Send 1,025 Drivers For Psychiatric Tests


Mr. Kayode Olagunju, FRSC Sector Commander, Lagos, in a press statement signed by the sector Public Education Officer, Ijeoma Nwachi, has said that 1,025 drivers were arrested during the Sallah festive period for various traffic offences like overloading and dangerous driving, and are to be sent to a psychiatric hospital for the determination of their level of sanity.

In the release, given to journalists at a media briefing, FRSC stated that 257 vehicles were also impounded for road worthiness offences. The commander used the occasion to educate the drivers and the general public on the need to obey traffic rules and regulations.

He further stated that the Act establishing FRSC prescribes fines ranging from N1,000 to N5,000 for offenders and imprisonment terms of between six months and nine years for multiple offenders.

In his analysis, only six accidents involving two deaths and 30 injured persons were recorded during the Sallah festivity period.

He seized the opportunity to warn commercial motorcycle riders (okada) to always obey traffic rules and regulations and re-echoed the use of helmet for both the Okada riders and their passengers.

He disclosed that radar guns meant to detect overspeeding vehicles and breathalysers to detect drunken drivers has equally been introduced into its operations.

He then urged all private car owners, commuter bus drivers and Okada riders to always obey all traffic rules and regulations, so as to have an accident-free society.
