INEC Stalls LP's Suit

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), this morning, in Abuja, stalled proceedings in an appeal instituted by the Labour Party(LP) against INEC over exclusion of the party from the Adamawa state re-run of gubernatorial election.

The apex court had adjourned till this morning for the arguments of parties to be heard. But this was, however, not to be as the electoral body only filed their brief of argument late yesterday, four months after the Apex court ordered for the filing of brief of arguments.

Counsel to Labour Party, Mr. Daniel Nwanyanwu, opposed the application filed by INEC seeking for an extension of time which will make their brief of argument, filed yesterday, to be seen as properly filed. He expressed displeasure over the tricks of INEC which appears partisan.

The five-man panel of the Supreme Court, led by Dahiru Musdapher, however, refused to shut out the electoral body and overruled the objection of the Labour Party.

The panel members also slammed INEC for frustrating the proceedings and awarded the cost of N30,000 against the electoral body in favour of the Labour Party as compensation for the delay occasioned by INEC. The appeal was subsequently adjourned till 17 November, 2008, for definite hearing.
