Two killed as robbers, police exchange fire


Two people were killed when dare-devil armed robbers stormed Union Bank Plc, Matori Lagos on Tuesday morning. A policeman attached to the bank was fatally wounded from gunshots fired by the robbers.

The robbers, numbering about 10, according to eye witnesses, stormed the bank at about 10.00 a.m. but met stiff resistance from the police. During the exchange of fire, one of the robbers was killed while a policeman was wounded.

Following the police resistance, the robbers fled to Gbagada area of Lagos, where there was another exchange of gunshots during which the robbers abandoned two vehicles, a Nissan Quest with registration number NK 700 KJA and CRV Honda with registration number NW 330 KJA.

The reinforcements of police, combining both the mobile policemen and regular police personnel chased the robbers to Ogun State around Compass Newspapers office where there was another round of exchange of fired during which one person was killed as several people sustained injuries.
When contacted, the Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Frank Mba, confirmed the incident, while explaining that the state police boss, Marvel Akpoyibo, has directed that the robbers should be fished out.

According to Mba, the combine team of crime fighters, from both Lagos and Ogun states, are now on the trail of the fleeing robbers while all the escaping routes along the borders have been blocked to ensure that bandits did not escape to the neighbouring countries.
