Investigations have revealed why the Ogun State House of Assembly was burgled yesterday. According to an impeccable source, the burglars may have come for some documents containing some of the impeachable offences of governor Gbenga Daniel.
A source, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that 'The burglars came for the minutes of the last sitting conducted by the former Speaker, Honourable Titi Oseni, where she adjourned till the following day before she was impeached.
'They came also for another file that contained the minutes where we passed the Bill that outstanding salaries should be paid from May 2008. But governor Daniel had stalled the payment since January without due process.'
Some of the legislators confirmed that five offices including those of the deputy clerk, the press and three others were burgled.
One of the legislators said: 'They think we are fools, but let me tell you something. All the documents in the Assembly belong to the public. So anybody can come for them any time, and such documents would be with all the 26 members and principal officers of the house.'
The legislators said they remained undeterred in performing their oversight functions as they are now checking the records of all the commissioners and the local council chairmen who allegedly collected huge allocations.
They said they needed to confirm whether the amount they collected is commensurate with what they are statutorily entitled to. When our correspondent spoke with the state Commissioner of Police, Solomon Olosegun, he confirmed that the House was burgled.
He said, 'My brother, I was there this afternoon (yesterday) with the state CID Director and the State PPRO to see things for myself. The clerk told me that nothing of importance was removed.
'But we have commenced our investigation. When I got to the Speaker's office, we discussed at length. I assure you we shall get to the root of the matter.'
Efforts to speak with some aides of the governor proved abortive as they switched off their phones. Our source said the aides had been warned not to speak on the incident as they were planning to travel for the chieftaincy title which would be conferred on governor Daniel, in Enugu.
