The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), a.k.a. Pyrates Confraternity, has said that the Lagos state Police Commissioner, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, lied when he made a sensational confession in a church, recently, that he was a cultist and member of the Pyrates Confraternity.

In a full page (paid) advertorial, published today, in one of the national newspapers, seeking to set the record straight, NAS said Akpoyibo was never a member of the group. In the advertorial, signed by Mr. Steve Ehimhen, the group's Director of Information, NAS stated that 'Mr. Akpoyobo is not, and was never a member of the National Association of Seadogs, a.k.a. Pyrates Confraternity.
'However, our records show that he tried as an undergraduate student of the University of Benin to join our organisation. He was, however, unsuccessful. It is listed as public records that the born-again Police Commissioner, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, was indeed one of the nine founding fathers of the Neo Black Movement of Africa, otherwise known as Black Axe on campuses.'
The group, which insisted that it is not a secret cult or an occult group and has never been one, said it was compelled to issue the public statement because 'we have waited for one week for Mr. Akpoyibo to deny that he made the claim credited to him that he was a member of our organisation, but he has failed and neglected to do so.
'We are even more worried by the fact that in the said confession, he never mentioned the real group which he actually belonged to. Why he should shield that group while unjustly dragging our name into his affairs, which had absolutely nothing to do with us, is a matter for concern…'
The Daily Sun of Monday, 8 September, had published a story and photograph of the chilling confession of the Lagos state Police boss, of his escapades in the cult and occult world in search of power and protection.
The confession took place during a programme organised by Lagos-based The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), with the topic: ‘The Role of the Church and Security'.
This has been generating ripples in Lagos. While some have applauded Marvel's courage for coming out to make such a confession, others have been calling for his head. In a reaction, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Frank Mbah, said his boss would not join issues with anyone over his testimony.
‘‘We are not joining issues with anybody over this. The people who placed an advertisement have the right to place it. It is their constitutional right. Nobody can deny them that. If you have money, you can place an advertisement in the papers. That is your right. We are not in a court of law. My boss went to give a testimony on the futility of depending on any other powers apart from God's. That is it.'
