Determined to enhance the performance of the state Judiciary, the Anambra State government has released the sum of N36.5 million for equipping the Judiciary Library and courtrooms.
The government has also presented eleven Toyota Corolla cars to the newly -appointed Judges and those that were operating without official car.
Governor Chris Ngige disclosed this at a special court session to mark the commencement of 2005 legal year in the state, and said that the judiciaries being the last hope of the citizens against injustice, oppression, tyranny and extreme deprivation would continue to receive necessary support from the executive arm.
Ngige noted his administration has discharged in full its responsibility to judicial personnel in spite of its bloated number and urged the management to prune down the size of the workforce.
He said this would enable the executive re-deploy those that would be affected to other government departments for greater productivity, adding that the communication gap that exists in the Judiciary with workers should be bridged to ensure industrial harmony.
In his address, the Chief Judge, Justice Chuka Okoli said the state Judiciary has braced up to the challenges of delays in disposing of court cases, and have put in measures to ensure quick disposal of cases.
Okoli decried the delay in the prosecution of accused persons, noting that his recent visit to prison in Onitsha and Awka revealed that about 755 accused persons were there awaiting trial for capital offences.
He thanked Ngige for the renovation of the vandalized Otuocha High Court and his other support to the Judiciary. He however appealed to the governor to assist in the completion of outstanding housing projects and control of erosion threatening the judicial headquarters.
