Nigeria’s Enyimba continued their miserable performance in this season’s CAF Champions League as they were crushed 3-0 by Coton Sport in Cameroon yesterday. The People’s Elephant have however, qualified for the semifinals, following Friday’s 2-2 draw between Al Hilal of Sudan and TP Mazembe of Congo AB.
Enyimba’s fall was made easier, following the expulsion of goalkeeper Rabiu Samivu in the 14th minute, making the Maurice Cooreman-tutored side to finish the game with 10 men. Scores at first half stood at 1-0.
After the interval, Enyimba showed some flashes but missed three begging chances. However, it was the hosts that scored twice to end the game 3-0.
The defeat means that the Nigerians lost all their three group away games almost with the same margin. The Aba Millionaires lost 3-2 to Al Hilal in Sudan on the first day of the group qualifiers, bowed 3-0 to TP Mazembe in Congo DR and were beaten 3-0 in Cameroon. In all (in the away games), they conceded nine goals and scored only two.
Coton Spot thus finished atop of the Group B table with 10 points, while Enyimba placed second with nine points. The first leg matches of the semifinals will come up on the first weekend of October (3,4,5) just as the return leg games are billed for October 17, 18 and 19.
