Death Spot At Lagos Airport

One day, if nothing urgent is done, there would be a tragic accident on the road leading to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA.

One day, if nothing urgent is done, there would be a tragic accident on the road leading to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA.

The terrible accident may happen at the VIP bus stop, opposite the Presidential Lounge. A speeding vehicle from Ikeja bus stop to MMIA may collide with another vehicle trying to link the main road from the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2, MMA2. A commercial motorcyclist trying to negotiate the roundabout may even compound the problem.

The problem here is the lack of traffic lights and the few traffic officials that man this spot. An illegal bus stop, just beside the roundabout, compounds the whole situation.

. To avoid loss of lives in the case of a fatal collision, something must be urgently done.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN and Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, operators of MMA2 must begin to think of how to remedy the situation before the nation is thrown into another round of mourning.

Traffic lights would be the first right move at the dangerous round about. Some Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA officials and traffic wardens should also be drafted to the spot.

Until now, there have been accidents at the VIP bus stop. Runway witnessed one in March this year.

While the victim, an okada rider, was bleeding profusely, the driver of the Mercedes Benz that hit him was trying to claim right of way.

He was, however, forced to take him to the hospital. The victim was lucky that it was day time.

In the night, the situation is even worse. There is no illumination for the road user and there are no road signs to direct them. In June, there was again a serious accident at the roundabout.

The auto-crash happened in the night and when Runway visited the area in the morning only the wreckage of the Honda car was at the junction.

The driver and the occupants may have died, as nobody would agree to take them to hospital after the accident.

Before a tragedy happens, the Federal Road Safety Corps, LASTMA, FAAN, Bi-Courtney, the Lagos State and the Lagos State Police Command should join hands and secure the area by providing street and traffic lights, road signs and officials to direct traffic around the area.
