The police at Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, have arrested Chief Balogun Asemudara over the alleged disappearance of some bags of Dangote Cement, valued at N15 million.
A man called Loamy Monchin, alleged to be an accomplice, was also arrested along with the chief. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, AIG Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed this to journalists while parading some suspected criminals in Lagos. He said the two suspects were arrested by surveillance detectives following a petition by Dangote Cement Plc.
According to Abubakar, the petition stated that the suspects allegedly stole cement worth over N15 million and stored it in a warehouse. He further disclosed that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to committing the offence. They explained that each time vessels carrying Dangote Cement were discharging cement in their warehouse(s), they (suspects) would take their boat beside the vessel, load some cement into it and pay the loaders N60,000.
They further confessed that they usually buy empty Dangote bags from Mr. Mandela, who is still at large, with which they re-bag the stolen cement. The AIG explained that so far, 700 bags of cement have been recovered from their warehouse at Ituagor village, opposite Apapa Wharf, Lagos, adding that efforts have been intensified to recover more of the stolen cement from the suspects
