Some lecturers of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) sleep in the classroom due to inadequate accommodation, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, has said.
Odugbemi, who paid a visit to Governor Babatunde Fashola, at the State House, Ikeja, at the weekend, told the governor that the school was currently facing accommodation problems, which has resulted in some lecturers sleeping in lecture halls. He called on the governor to assist by extending the state's mortgage facility to the lecturers to enable them own their own houses.
The Vice Chancellor added that if the lecturers have no place to lay their heads, they would be unable to give the students qualitative education. Odugbemi also urged the state government to demolish illegal houses obstructing drainage in the area.
Responding, Fashola urged the university and its lecturers to buy into the mortgage facility for housing initiated by the state government to enable them become landlords. He also requested that a list be forwarded to his office for possible assistance. The governor added that he would build a jetty around the campus to facilitate movement of the lecturers, workers and students of the institution, as this would help reduce the pressure on the roads.
On the issue of demolition of houses obstructing drainage in the area, Fashola said the demolition of buildings always had a twin effect on the state. It affects the state government financially while displaced residents become homeless. 'People whose houses are demolished would blame the government for rendering them homeless. But if this is not done, the people affected by flooding caused by buildings erected on drainage channels would also accuse the government of not finding solutions to their problems,' he stated. Fashola assured the visiting UNILAG team that the state government would find a way round the issue so that it would be a win-win matter for all concerned.

The lingering crisis in the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new dimension over the weekend, as the party set up a 7-man disciplinary committee to probe members of the State House of Assembly.
P.M.News gathered that the panel, which is headed by the state chairman of the party, Chief Joju Fadairo, is to probe what was described as anti-party activities of the lawmakers in Abuja, last week.
Part of the allegations levelled against the state lawmakers was their meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, and national leaders of the party in Abuja during which they allegedly insisted on the reinstatement of Senator Tunde Osholake, as the chairman of the party in Ogun Central Senatorial District.
They were alleged to have kicked against the decision of the Ogun State PDP to replace Osholake with Bode Mustapha, an action that was described as anti-party. P.M.News sources revealed that the lawmakers would be summoned this week by the party's probe panel, to explain why they usurped the party's function regarding issues bordering on elective offices. When contacted on the development, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly declined comment, saying 'I will talk at the appropriate time'.
A source in the state assembly, however, told P.M.News that the state party chairman, Joju Fadairo, was only playing out a script written by the state governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel to frustrate the lawmakers. The source said that the development has continued to tear the state executive and legislative arms apart.
