Fashola Tasks Judges On Justice

Governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has admonished legal practitioners in the state to be cautious in justice delivery.

Governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has admonished legal practitioners in the state to be cautious in justice delivery.

The governor, in his speech at a ceremony, held at the Lagos Central Mosque, said judges in Nigeria, especially those in Lagos state, should be very cautious in the issuance of exparte motion, which, he said, always leads to unnecessary delay in the administration of justice.

Governor Fashola also noted that lawyers who used the law to hamper justice are fond of applying for exparte motion to stop proceedings in the court. 'I am not condemning it totally, but judges should be wary of lawyers who always use exparte motion,' he said.

The governor revealed further that his administration, in conjunction with the Lagos judiciary, had over the years been trying to improve on the justice delivery system in the state.

He promised that the state government would try hard to improve on justice delivery, adding that the state was focusing much on the magistrate system.

Justice Kazeem Alogba, who spoke on behalf of Muslim judges, said Islam is about justice and nothing is expected of the Muslim judges, except equity, fairness and justice.

'As a Muslim, nothing is expected of us than to be just in justice delivery,' he said. In his own speech, Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland, Rt. Revd. (Prof.) Bayo Akinde, acknowledged the supremacy of judges and magistrates.

He admonished them to ensure justice, and look beyond the glamour of their positions. He advised judges on divorce cases, which, he said, is a great offence before God, stressing that they should bring Christian principles to bear on divorce cases brought before them.
