An old woman has been burnt to death at a building in Jakande Estate, Mile 2, after it was gutted by fire this morning.
The affected building is Block 203, Flats 5 and 6. According to sources, the fire incident was caused by power outage and gas explosion in another building. P.M.News gathered that the old woman, who had just been discharged from the hospital after a brief illness was trapped.
Though the woman was reported to have escaped from her flat, she was later trapped in the staircase and was burnt to death. Her neighbours, who declined to disclose the identity of the woman, blamed fire fighters for not responding promptly to their distress calls.
One of the occupants of the burnt flat, Mr. Osuyah, was the first to have noticed the fire because his flat was the first to be gutted. It was gathered that he tried to put out the fire by himself without telling his neighbours.
'It was after the fire raged uncontrollably that he later called his neighbours,' a source at the scene told our reporter.
Part of the building has almost collapsed as a result of the fire incident. Present at the scene was a staff of Niger Insurance who called for proper investigation of what really caused the fire.
Meanwhile, the other affected families declined to speak on the incident, while the police from Festac Town have taken away the remains of the burnt old woman.
