Mortuary Not Overfilled - LASUTH

The management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has condemned reports that its mortuary is overfilled with dead bodies as a result of the implementation of the controversial coroner law.

The management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has condemned reports that its mortuary is overfilled with dead bodies as a result of the implementation of the controversial coroner law.

'The management of the hospital wishes to state categorically that there is no truth in the allegation,' says LASUTH Chief Medical Director, Dr. Femi Olugbile.

Observation by P.M. News at the mortuary showed that the mortuary was not overfilled with dead bodies as reported.

The usual odour that characterises mortuary when one goes closer was completely absent from the LASUTH mortuary.

'The mortuary in LASUTH, which is run as a public-private partnership is among the best in Nigeria. It is coping well with the volume of work it has to do and the quality of service is excellence,' Olugbile stated.

He said the management of the hospital was prepared to guide journalists on a tour of the facility in order to demonstrate the true state of affairs.

He urged the the public to ignore the false information and continue to patronise the facility.

There are fears that since the controversial coroner law came into operation in the state, doctors would be overworked as a result of the large number of autopsy to be carried out on several dead bodies.

Doctors have kicked against the law which, they argued, does not favour them; and that they were not carried along when it was being put together.

Olugbile submitted that the new coroner law came with a lot of challenges but expressed optimism that the challenges would be surmounted because the hospital plans to beef up its personnel to cope with the system.

Governor Babatunde Fashola recently disclosed that the new coroner law would be amended to suit all parties.
