Monday Oboyibo, husband of a woman who allegedly stabbed her friend in a hotel room at Ijeshatedo, Lagos and attempted to steal her baby, has abandoned her for another woman.
P.M.News gathered that Oboyibo abandoned his embattled wife, Onyinye, at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons, Apapa where she is still being detained over her role in the child stealing saga.
Investigations revealed that Oboyibo was traumatised by the action of his wife of over 10 years, who was said to have deceived him that she was pregnant, not knowing that she had hatched a plan to steal her friend's baby.
In her desperation to have a child and avoid losing her husband, she was said to have conceived the idea of stealing her friend's baby to satisfy her desire.
Narrating the incident to P.M.News, the victim, Janet Monday, confirmed to P.M.News at their Isheri-Olofin, Ogun State residence that Onyinye was her friend and was always buying her gifts.
'One day, she opened up to me that her problem was that she needed a child because she did not want to lose her husband. So, she sought my assistance. I asked her how I could help her and she said she had met her pastor who told her that for her to conceive, she needed to stay with a newly born baby for four days. I told her I will not be able to assist, as my husband will not accept such an arrangement,' she narrated.
Janet said when she refused to cooperate with her, the accused conceived another idea by tricking her to a hospital where she (Janet) did a scan which the accused presented to her unsuspecting husband as hers, indicating that she was pregnant.
It was learnt that when it was time for Janet to deliver, the accused offered to assist by taking her to a hospital at Mile 2, where she claimed that the hospital charges would be cheaper.
Not suspecting any foul play, the victim agreed and went with the accused to the hospital where she successfully had her baby.
The next day, the accused allegedly told Janet that they would leave the hospital for her brother's place, where they would temporarily stay. According to her, that would reduce the medical bill and enable her recover before they return to Ogun State.
Instead of taking her to her brother's place as promised, she took her to Safen Classical Guest House at 4, Omilani Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, where she allegedly tried to kill her and steal her baby.
P.M.News learnt that on the fateful day, the accused allegedly brought out a knife from her bag and stabbed Janet.
Luck, however, ran out on her as the victim screamed before she fell down and became unconscious. This drew the attention of the hotel staff who rushed to the room.
On forcing the door open, they found the victim bleeding and unconscious. They immediately contacted the police and the accused was arrested and later charged to Cele Magistrate's Court, Ijeshatedo.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N80,000 with two sureties. Since then, Onyinye has been in prison custody because her husband and relations refused to perfect her bail.
P.M.News gathered that her husband was traumatised by her act and accused her of bringing shame to his family.
When the matter came up for hearing on Monday, the prosecutor told the court that the victim was discharged from an undisclosed hospital on Friday and requested a date for hearing. The matter has been adjourned till 22 September, 2008.
