Beginning from September 3rd, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) says it will step up campaign of attacks and no longer be calling for the release of one of its leaders, Henry Okah.

MEND spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo in an online interview with The Guardian said if Okah was not released by September, the group will assume he has made the ultimate sacrifice for the Niger Delta struggle. "We are not worried because Okah has made up his mind to accept whatever the government throws at him for a just cause.

Because of his spirit, we will not compromise as we no longer see him as the government's joker. By September 3, we will no longer be asking for his release but will instead step up the campaign of attacks and assume he has made the ultimate sacrifice for the struggle."

The group accused the Federal Government of framing him up in collaboration with some oil majors operating in the country which have always seen his position as uncompromising. Prominent Ijaws, including President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) Professor Kimse Okoko, former of Minister of Petroleum, Professor Tam David-West and Chief Edwin Clark have all called for the release of Okah as a prerequisite for the return of peace to the Niger Delta.
