Ohaneze Chieftain, Lawmakers Back Peace Committee

As seven more new members of the National Assembly express their support for the Chief Chuma Nwofor-led Peace and Congress Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, a member of Ohaneze Ndigbo and frontline Anambra politician, Chief Ifeanyi Enechukwu, has blamed the failure of the party to imbibe obedience to rule of law and respect to democratic principles in the past for its woes in the state and the entire South-East.

Chief Enechukwu decried the negative culture of subverting the people's will especially after the party's primary elections that preceded the general elections.

According to the former acting President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, who was Speaker of the Old Anambra State House of Assembly during the administration of Chief Jim Nwobodo, 'we want PDP Plc-owned and controlled by the people, not PDP Ltd-where ownership, control and decision making is limited to only a few individuals who run it like a personal estate.

'Political parties are usually run with a collective idea and involvement, not a situation where an individual (names withheld), usually sponsored from the nation's power base in Abuja, comes in with so much cash to buy off the party, its offices and candidates.'

He gave kudos to the zonal headquarters of the party for its stand, and wake-up call to recalcitrant members who have been told to shape up or ship out.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly members who have thrown their weight behind the committee after some of their colleagues and some members of the State Assembly had earlier done that, are Senator Annie Okonkwo (Central), Senator Emma Anosike (ex-North), Iyom Uche Ekwunife (Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency); Charles Odedo (Idemili Federal Constituency); Chuma Nzeribe (Ihiala Federal Constituency); Ralph Okeke (Anambra East/West Federal Constituency); Emma Uchieze (Awka Federal Constituency) among others.

Senator Okonkwo as well as Ekwunife said their support for the committee and the on-going re-orgnaization and restructuring of the party organs/machinery was to have a robust PDP once again.

'We need to have a party that derives its power, strength and control from the people, not a close-circuit affair or a clique of well-placed individuals,' Senator Okonkwo said.
