In what seems to have become an annual ritual, men of the underworld have again, raided the Calabar High Court to cart away valuable items.
Sources at the state high court who confided in P.M News, said the robbers made away with about N12 million cash. The robbers invaded the offices of the Chief Registrar and Chief Accountant respectively, and destroyed some equipment, which included office doors, safes and table drawers to cart away huge sums of money and other valuable items.
Confirming the incident, some members of the bench who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the armed robbers invaded the court premises at about 2 a.m. , after they had allegedly attacked and overwhelmed the night guards at the entrance to the court premises.
Some staff of the court said the robbers allegedly gained entry into the Chief Accountant and Chief Registrar's offices, after they had tied the security men with ropes, brandishing their firearms and other offensive weapons.
After the operation, which reportedly lasted about 30 minutes, the robbers left the scene unchallenged, as there were no security operatives around the vicinity.
Sources at the State Police Command Headquarters and the state High Court, said the robbers escaped with their loot, leaving behind a brand new axe, one 'Monday hammer' and an iron bar, which they used in breaking the office doors, table drawers and safe.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, ASP Thomas Okpene, said the Chief Registrar, Chief Accountant as well as the night guards (names withheld), have been arrested and detained.
'We are determined to sniff out the culprits. For now, the Chief Accountant, the Chief Registrar, and the security men who were on duty, have been arrested and detained,' the PPRO said.
