A family has been thrown into mourning after husband and wife were electrocuted.
LAST Monday started like any other day for Malam Baba Abubakar and his wife, Yewa. But it ended a sad day for members of the family.
There was no premonition of death. Infact, the couple was said to have just 're-united' that day when death came calling as the wife just returned to Minna after about one month separation from her matrimonial home. On the fateful day, there was torrential rain in Minna that forced many people to bed including the deceased and their three children.
The wife was said to have taken one of their children out to urinate at about 8:30 p.m. but never went back to the house. She had been electrocuted after coming into contact with a P.H.C.N live wire that was pulled down from the pole as a result of the storm and fell on the floor of the compound.
It was reliably gathered that the late Yewa who was trying to play the 'good Samaritan' by packing the wire for other co-tenants not to step on was immediately electrocuted as she touched the cable.
With the little boy with her in the rain helpless, the woman screamed until she could breath no more. The shout for help immediately drew the attention of her husband to the scene and out of ignorance and love to rescue his dear wife, he tried to pull her from the cable only to be electrocuted too. The shout of Abubakar for help attracted co-tenants to the scene only to behold the couple stone dead and their son crying.
Knowing the implication of touching either of the deceased, the case was immediately reported at the Kpakungu Divisional Police Post after which their corpses were removed. Abubakar, who was until his death a commercial vehicle driver, was described as an 'easy going man who could not hurt a fly.' Niger State Police Command spokesman, ASP Richard Oguche, who confirmed the incident, said police was investigating the matter.
