*Indicts officers, barons over missing drugs

Abuja - CHAIRMAN of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Ahmadu Giade says that some of the banned drugs seized from suspects actually disappeared from the exhibit rooms of the Agency nationwide. Giade stated this while answering questions from journalists in Bauchi. He attributed the disappearance of the exhibition to the activities bad eggs in the Agency.

According to him, 'The bad eggs among my men do collaborate with some of the drug barons and so do everything possible to pervert the course of justice by arranging to remove the seized substances that would have been used as exhibits at the courts against the suspects.'

The chairman expressed worries over the development saying 'you cannot believe it but it is true and not allegations that seized substances do get missing in my exhibit rooms across the country but we are doing everything possible to curb the trend so that the drugs war will be won by all of us included,' he said. Giade said that recently seventy-five personnel of the Agency were shown the way out for various offences that negate the objectives of the operations of the Agency.

'This will be a continuous exercise until such a time that majority if not all the bad eggs were removed so that the operations of the Agency will be smooth and effective,' he added.

Giade stated that one of the new measures adopted by the Agency is the immediate destruction of the seized substances as soon as the suspects were convicted.

He added the destruction has been carried out in six states of the country including the FCT which according to him, burning has taken place twice in the glaring eyes of the public so that they will know and believe that the Agency is total about the drugs war.

The NDLEA boss said that there is a new orientation among the officers and men of the Agency now saying, 'Before now, there was hardly seizures and arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja because it was believed that those who used the airport are untouchable but let me tell you that as at today we have made over sixty seizures and arrested quite a number of the suspects, this has gone to demonstrate that we are battle ready for anyone who involves in the illicit drug trade.'
