The United Nation (UN) Secretary General, Mr. Banki Moon, has again commended the leading role played by the Nigerian military to restore peace in Liberia but says a lot more need to be done to ensure that Liberia does not slide back into conflicts and chaos.
Banki-Moon, who was speaking at the presentation of medals to 1,649 officers and soldiers of the Nigerian contingent, under the United Nations Mission in Liberia(UNMIL), held at the Samuel Doe Stadium, in Liberia, Monrovia, paid tribute to the gallantry and heroic sacrifices by Nigerian soldiers in Liberia, and urge them to continue with the good work that will eventually lead to the recovery, rehabilitation and developmental process pursued by the Liberian government to move the country forward without hinderance.
While noting that there has been a significant progress in the area of peace thus making the UN to continue a gradual drawdown of its personnel, the Secretary General said there are still many challenges ahead which the UN is prepared to support the government.
According to him, 'we know that there is a larger problem of the rule of law sector, which we are prepared to support the government of liberia in addressing. We will continue to work hard in a concerted manner with the government to implement measures to ensure a safe and secure environment and thereby restore citizens confidence in Liberia 's rule of law institutions.'
