Fake Currency In Circulation, Commissioner Alerts

Kaduna Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Saidu Adamu has raised the alarm on alleged fake N1billion in circulation in the state.

Kaduna Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Saidu Adamu has raised the alarm on alleged fake N1billion in circulation in the state.

Displaying some of the fake currency notes intercepted by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, before newsmen today, the Commissioner warned members of the public to be mindful of people that have some of the currency notes in their possession and would want to spend them now that they know that the alarm has been raised.

Adamu explained that members of the fake currency syndicate escaped when they suspected that they were trailed by the NDLEA patrol team along Kaduna Zaria express road.

According to him, the fake currency dealers abandoned the vehicle with all the money inside it.

He, however, said though the suspects are at large, information gathered by NDLEA show that the culprits have been in the business of minting fake currencies for quite a period of time undisclosed.

He, however, gave assurance that the state government in collaboration with the NDLEA and police will ensure that the fake currency dealers are arrested as soon as possible.

Speaking on how to distinguish the fake currency from the original printed by Central Bank of Nigeria, Adamu said, 'The fake five hundred naira is crispier and shorter in size while the one thousand naira is wider in size and thicker when felt'.

He noted that the fake currency notes carry same serial numbers but looks more faded than the original. The information Commissioner therefore urged the public to report anyone seen spending the fake currency notes, stressing that tThe action will help the police to trace the culprits.'
