The Secretary General of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Chief Willy Ezugwu says the body is neither an opposition nor a pressure group but an umbrella of political parties with a common goal of nurturing the nation's democracy.

While on a courtesy visit to the Acting Governor of Cross River State, Hon. Francis Adah, in Calabar, recently, Ezugwu explained that the group which comprises members of registered political parties came on board in 2002 when INEC placed embargo on the registration of more political groups in the country, adding that the body engaged INEC which later gave approval for the registration of about 50 more political parties.
He called on government not to see the group as enemy but partner in progress by appointing its members into position of responsibilities to promote good governance, noting with dismay that PDP as a member, has left the body for other political parties to handle and urged them to embrace the group for the good of the country.
The Acting Governor, Adah said the formation of CNPP was a welcome development because, according to him, the group acts as checks and balances to the government as people within the circle of power may at any point lose sight of some vital programmes that could impact the lives of the citizens.
Adah stressed that the essence of the CNPP is not to bring division among people or group but to develop different approaches to governance, adding that his door is open to all political parties that are willing to key into government's programmes or criticize constructively for socio-economic development of the state.
He called on them to join force with PDP in the state to build Cross River State which he noted does not belong to PDP alone but all, indigenes and non indigenes and needs the services of all and sundry for it to work effectively.
The Acting Governor restated his readiness to reconcile all aggrieved parties that might have been hurt in one way or the other as the country is still learning the democratic process and wished that the Cross River State chapter of CNPP will be inaugurated as well.
