Atiku not returning to PDP -AC

The Action Congress (AC) has ruled out the possibility of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which it described as the cancer threatening the survival of Nigeria's democracy.

The Action Congress (AC) has ruled out the possibility of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which it described as the cancer threatening the survival of Nigeria's democracy.

AC made the assertion in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to douse speculations that Atiku might be heading back to the PDP, following his commendation of actions taken so far by the ruling party to ensure internal democracy within its ranks.

'The comments by His Excellency, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on this issue have been misinterpreted to mean he could be considering returning to the PDP, but nothing could be farther from the truth than that insinuation,' AC said.

According to the party, it was true that the former vice president congratulated the PDP for having the courage to admit the lack of internal democracy in its ranks, he was quoted to have said that the admission, if followed by a sincere commitment, would rub off positively on the nation's democracy.
'His statement was unambiguous, that if the PDP could succeed in instituting internal democracy within its ranks, it will have a salutary effect not only on the party but also on governance and on the country's democracy, especially the electoral process.

'This is because, for example, the moment the PDP stops imposing candidates who did not win the primaries, the party will also most likely end its string of election violence, and the manipulation of votes to rig in unpopular candidates.
'That means elections will begin to count, and the consequent true practice of the principle of one man, one vote will help strengthen our democracy.

'Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has always been an advocate of the need for internal democracy within political parties. After all, it is said that you cannot give what you don't have. But his statement on this issue should not be misinterpreted by mischievous people. It is not an indication of any imaginary plan by him to return to the PDP,' AC said.

The party assured its teeming supporters nationwide that to date, the former vice president had has not even been formally approached by anyone to return to the PDP fold, and had no intention whatsoever of returning to the PDP.
