The management of Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos-Badary Expressway, Ojo, has stated categorically that Godfrey Audu, who was one of the five hoodlums arrested along the ever busy Ikorodu Road, by detectives from the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for allegedly robbing innocent people in a commercial bus, was not a student of the institution.

P.M.News Mid-Week-Crime-Watch on page 7 of 4 June, 2008, had reported that the five suspects, commonly referred to as catch-in-the-air, were arrested on 27 May, 2008, at about 12.35 a.m., as they set out to unleash terror on commuters.

The 31-year-old Godfrey Audu, who confessed that he hails from Benue State, and claiming to be a 300-level Computer Science (Part-Time) student of the university, has, however, been discovered to have lied to the police.

According to an official letter dated 3 July, 2008, from the office of the Registrar/Secretary of LASU, Mr. Oluwatoyin Oshun, to P.M.News, 'Our investigations have revealed that no record of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, shows that a student bears the name Godfrey Audu on the list of registered students in the School of Part-Time Studies in our university.

'Our investigations also revealed that from the photograph of the suspected armed robber displayed, no student of LASU and resident of the staff quarters in the university, could identify any of the suspects paraded as a LASU student or resident of the staff quarters.'

Godfrey Audu had confessed to this reporter on his arrest that: 'I am a member of the group, I reside at the staff quarters in LASU. I joined the group to make quick money to sponsor my education.' Other suspects also confessed to the crime and have since been charged to the Yaba Magistrate's Court 2 on a two-court charge of robbery.

The charge number B/64/2008, filed by the Commissioner of Police, stated that 'the five suspects did conspire to commit felony to wit and armed robbery'.
