MEND denies insistence on Agagu's ouster

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has distanced itself from a statement purportedly made by MEND, Ondo State chapter, insisting that Governor Olusegun Agagu must leave office in view of the election petitions tribunal's verdict.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has distanced itself from a statement purportedly made by MEND, Ondo State chapter, insisting that Governor Olusegun Agagu must leave office in view of the election petitions tribunal's verdict.
MEND, Ondo, had in a statement on Wednesday insisted that Agagu vacate the office of governor since the tribunal had declared that Labour Partys' candidate, Olusegun Mimiko, won the April 14 2007 governorship election.

However, MEND in a statement signed by Jomo Gbomo, said the group has never threatened any havoc if Agagu is not removed from office.
It noted that those using the name of MEND are only doing so to intimidate their opponents as it is not involved in the Ondo political crisis.

The statement read in part: 'Some local newspapers in Nigeria have recently linked the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to taking a position over the electoral tribunal which called for the removal of the Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, from office. The only means of expressing our position is through this e-mail address. We do not send messages via text or by phone calls and believe that those using our name are doing so to intimidate their political opponents."
