Teachers suspend strike

After one month of strike to press home their demand for a differential pay package, primary and secondary teachers across the country on Tuesday decided to return to classrooms to give the government another opportunity to resolve the matter through dialogue.

After one month of strike to press home their demand for a differential pay package, primary and secondary teachers across the country on Tuesday decided to return to classrooms to give the government another opportunity to resolve the matter through dialogue.

The decision of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to suspend the strike followed a meeting between representatives of state governors and officers of the union in Abuja. However, the suspension is for only two weeks, after which the teachers would return to the trenches if their demand was not satisfactorily addressed.

The leadership of the NUT met in Abuja for several hours with State governors on Monday at the instance of the Kwara State governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

At the meeting, both parties had agreed to set up a joint committee to work out modalities for resolving the crisis which has crippled primary and secondary education in the country since June 29.

The NUT called its members on an indefinite strike on July 29 following the refusal of the Federal Government to issue a circular on the Teachers Salary Structure (TSS).
