Outgoing chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Engr. Rasheed Adebola Shabi, has said he established well equipped Adult Literacy Centres across the council area, with qualified and experienced instructors drawn from the locality, to enhance learning in the quest to eradicate illiteracy in the area.

In a report on his achievements, Shabi said that he also rehabilitated six classroom blocks each at Fazil-Omar Primary School, Iwaya and Olumo Primary School, Onike, as well as provided 2,500 pairs of desks and benches for primary schools; renovated the local government library at St. Agnes in collaboration with the Lions Club; donated exercise books and other writing materials to schools; organised quiz competitions among school pupils as well as organised computer awareness programmes for both primary and secondary school pupils and seminars on social ills within the society, among other things.

Shabi said that during his tenure, major canals were cleared to alleviate the suffering of residents resulting from flood. They include those at Abule Ijesa, Iwaya, Oyadiran and Makoko, while drainages were also constructed at Arowolo, Omitogun, Apollo and Wegbo Streets as well as culverts constructed at Pedro Street, Iwaya and Bailey Street in Abule Oja.

A copy of the report made available to Inside Politics last Thursday, quoted the outgoing chairman as saying that his administration also sunk 62 bore holes which have become fully operational in all the wards of the council area, while street lights were either constructed or activated at Makoko Road, Harvey Road, Borno Way, Owodunni Street (Iwaya), Mosuro Street (Abule Oja), Little Road (Yaba), Oyadiran Estate Road (Sabo), Thornbull Avenue, Eletu Odibo (Abule Ijesa) and Barikisu Iyede Street, Abule Oja.

The chairman said that during his tenure, his administration gave due attention to qualitative health care services. According to him, apart from the routine house-to-house inspection to detect unhygienic premises and other things constituting environmental nuisance to the area, two mini public health centres situated at Obadina Street, Abule Oja, and Lagos Mainland Local Government Primary School, Igbobi Sabe, were constructed, while Ayetoro Public Health Centre was rehabilitated.

The report also disclosed that roads were either constructed or rehabilitated at Raymond, Mosuro, Queens, Araromi, Salami, Davies/Ayodele, Simpson, Olonade, Wegbo, Karimu Kotun, Ajayi, Latunde and Apollo Streets as well as Iwaya Road.

The outgoing chairman stated further that between 2004 and 2006, his administration embarked on poverty alleviation programmes during which motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding mills and fishing implements, among other materials, were given out to residents as part of the dividends of democracy.

On security, Shabi stated that a peace and security committee was inaugurated, which held meetings at regular intervals, on ways of maintaining peace within the council area. Besides this, he also said that two buses were donated to Adekunle and Sabo police divisions for patrol, to curb the activities of men of the underworld in the area.
