A shop owner and a driver with the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, escaped death when a trailer crashed into an official car belonging to the university and destroyed several shops.
The trailer later crashed into a building at Oto-Awori, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The trailer, which hit the LASU vehicle and pushed it away from the road before crashing into a one-storey building facing the expressway, was said to have had a break failure as a result of overspeeding.
The driver of the LASU official car was rushed to a nearby hospital, while the female passager in the vehicle did not sustain any injury. An eyewitness at the scene of the incident, Mr. Tope Lawal, said the accident occurred when the trailer, coming from Mile-2, left its lane and hit the car coming from Badagry, crushed it and pushed it away from the road before crashing into a row of shops and the building.
The police at Ijanikin station confirmed the story. One of the officers on duty, who pleaded anonymity, said the accident would serve as a lesson to those who build shops or take pleasure in selling by the roadside. He said there was a time they had to chase people away from the spot to avoid calamity.
