Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Mbama Okiro has ordered the Commissioner of Police in Lagos state to take possession of a plot of land measuring three hectares in the Lekki area of the State and put it into use for the entire Police Force.

Addressing a gathering of senior police officers from the ranks of Commissioners and above in Abuja at the weekend Okiro said, "Lagos State Governor (Babatunde Fashola) recently gave me a three hectares plot of land at Lekki but I said I don't need it. Rather, I said he should issue the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of the land in the name of Nigeria Police Force."
The IGP, however, called on the Commissioner of Police in the state, who was also present at the meeting, and directed him to take over the land and develop it for the Police Housing Scheme. He lamented further on how some plots of land belonging to the Police in some parts of the country are been abused and sometimes taken over by some unauthorized persons.
Mr. Okiro further disclosed that he has written to the President requesting that the Federal Government properties occupied by the Police should not be sold under the monetization policy to any individual or organizations adding that if need be, they should be sold to the Police or its personnel.
On the Police Housing Scheme, Okiro charged all the State Police Commissioners to handle the issue with aggression by liaising with their various state governors, adding that the governors should be made to understand that each state government will benefit 40 per cent from the scheme, by allowing Civil Servants or any citizen from the state that can afford it.
