Abia State Governor, Dr Theodore Orji has written to President Umaru Yar'Adua, urging him to investigate the daring attack on his convoy, by heavily armed gunmen at Ngwaiyiekwe, Ugwunagbo Local Government Area last Tuesday.
Orji also made the same request to the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Services and the National Security Adviser, while also notifying the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In the same vein, the Abia State Government has called on the state police command to arrest, the state chairman of the PDP and his officials to throw more light on what they knew about the July 22 attack.
In the letter to the president and the security chiefs, the Abia governor observed that the weaponry, marksmanship and concentration of gunshots on his staff car left him with no option than to conclude that the attack was beyond a mere robbery operation.
Dr Orji noted that if the perpetrators of the attack were allowed to go free, it would embolden them to plan a similar attack on any government official at any level in future.
He restated his assertion that the attack was the handiwork of opposition politicians in Abia State who did not want to wait for the resolution of the electoral dispute at the Appeal Court.
Governor Orji noted that a serious action from the Presidency on the attack on his convoy would not only enhance chances of apprehending the culprits, but would also serve as a deterrent to others with similar inclinations.
While calling for the arrest of Abia State PDP officials the state government, in a press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Sam Hart, noted that the statements credited to the PDP officials in the media about the attack indicated that they were conversant with the attack on the governor's convoy and why it was carried out.
The statement wondered why the PDP chairman, Chief Ndidi Okereke and one Chief Henry Agbaeze, the publicity secretary of the party were already issuing statements giving details on the motive of the attack even before police launched their investigations.
The Abia State Government particularly wanted the police to compel Chief Okereke to come and substantiate his story regarding the N2 billion allegedly being conveyed to Port Harcourt by the convoy.
Government would also like Chief Okereke to assist the police in getting to the root of his alleged plot to eliminate the State Deputy Governor, Chris Akomas and replace him with Mr. Mascot Uzor Kalu.
'Government is of the firm belief that a further investigation into the weighty statements made by these officials of the PDP in Abia State will assist the police get to the root of the events of last Tuesday," the statement said.
