Tribunal Judgement: Tension In Ondo

As the Ondo State election petitions tribunal gives judgement on the 2007 governorship election this week, indigenes of the state have become apprehensive over the outcome of the verdict and who it would favour.

As the Ondo State election petitions tribunal gives judgement on the 2007 governorship election this week, indigenes of the state have become apprehensive over the outcome of the verdict and who it would favour.

The candidate of the opposition Labour Party (LP) in the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, is challenging the declaration of Dr. Olusegun Agagu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The apprehension by the indigenes of the state is coming on the heels of earlier verdicts of the Justice Nabaruma-led tribunal which were not in favour of the ruling PDP in the state.

Statistics show that the PDP has already lost 14 political positions through the judgements. These positions include seven seats in the state's House of Assembly including the election of the House Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bakkita Bello.

The PDP has also lost six seats in the House of Representatives, and the Senatorial seat of the state's West Senatorial district won by Senator Gbenga Ogunniya.

The tribunal verdicts have also favoured nine political seats of the opposition Labour Party which was inaugurated only four months before the 2007 election.
