Acting Minister of Health, Dr. Mohammed Lawal has appealed to state and local governments to revamp general hospitals in their domain and make them functional and cost effective to handle primary health care cases.
Lawal made the appeal yesterday at the commissioning of the new private ward built by the federal government and the management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). He said most primary health care institutions in the country are in dilapidated conditions.
This, he said, has increased the volume of work for health care providers at the tertiary health institutions, where personnel have had to attend to patients who ordinarily could have been taken care of at the primary health care level.
The minister commended LUTH, describing it as a unique health institution that thrives despite catering to large populations, saying its concentration of highly specialised manpower enabled it to respond to a variety of health conditions.
