Senate President David Mark has called on government and the striking teachers to embrace dialogue as a way out of the dispute over implementation of teachers' new salary scale.
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) is demanding that the federal government implement the Teachers' Salary Scale (TSS).
Mark spoke when he received executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) led by its President, Comrade Olalekan Smart Edward, in his office, Abuja.
In a statement by Mark's Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, 'NUT must sit with the government and settle this issue; dialogue should be a major option. Dialogue is strength; there should be no rigid position."
He called for reasonable welfare for the teachers, saying 'I would not support situations whereby teachers are not paid very well. I do not support that their rewards should be in heaven, they should be rewarded here on earth."
'Teachers should also remember that their work remains paramount to building brighter tomorrows, they should do their work with every amount of responsibility," he said.
The Senate President, however, assured Nigerians of a speedy resolution of the lingering crisis within the education sector.
He said that the legislature and the executive would work harmoniously to reinvigorate the sector from its present state.
He condemned various cases of cultism in the nation's tertiary institutions, even as he cautioned students to shun all such vices and join hands in exposing any criminal act among students.
In his response, NANS president said that the students across the country were confident in the present leadership of the Senate and assured that NANS would continue to support the senate president.
