Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, breezed into Aso Rock yesterday singing a victory song for his deliverance from the jaws of death. 'It is for the devils to do their own and for God to deliver," he said repeatedly.
The governor who was reported to have been poisoned ostensibly by political enemies and subsequently flown abroad bared his mind on the incident in a chat with the State House correspondents after meeting with the acting Chief of Staff to the President, Dr. Gbolade Osinowo.
Although he refused to make a categorical statement on the issue of poison, Daniel, however, described what happened to him as one of life's challenges which God had helped him to overcome.
'That is life's challenge. I am fit as a fiddle. It is for the devils to do their own and for God to deliver. God has delivered, so why are you worried about that? I say it is for the devil to do their own and for God to deliver," he stated in response to a question.
On the political crisis rocking the state, the governor said the stories making the rounds to that effect were being blown out of proportion by people, he said, derived pleasure in seeing that all was not well with the state and urged all Nigerians to ignore the ‘misinformation', saying 'Ogun is fine and peaceful," the governor explained that what was happening in the state was a little misunderstanding with some members of the state legislature which he described as a mere personal disagreement.
'Ogun is fine and peaceful. We had some challenges in the House of Assembly. A lot of misinformation by interested parties, outside parties, people who are usually interested when there is crisis. But Ogun State remains one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. Have you heard that anybody died? Have you heard that anybody was assaulted? Don't believe some of those things you read in some of the papers. Believe what I tell you," he further pointed out.
Asked to comment on his relationship with the state House of Assembly, he said even when they disagreed based on either personal reasons or on principle, their relationship remained cordial.
'I think my relationship with the lawmakers is cordial but we can disagree on principles and I think we will disagree to agree. Personally, they are all my boys. When you see them say that is what I said."
We can disagree on principles" he said. On the rumoured moves by members of the lawmakers to impeach him, he said it was news to him, wondering what could have led to that and what the impeachable offences against him would be.
'This is news to me. I am not aware. What are the impeachable offences? Or is it that when there is a personal disagreement there is impeachment. I guess impeachment is something that is constitutional. There could be personal disagreement and there could be disagreement on principles. I don't think personal disagreement means impeachment. We are not running a banana republic," he added.
