DIVERS on Thursday recovered the vehicle which had plunged into the Erwhemukohworie River from the Warri-Port Harcourt highway.
DIVERS on Thursday recovered the vehicle which had plunged into the Erwhemukohworie River from the Warri-Port Harcourt highway.
The incident occured at Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, one body was recovered by expert divers almost 48 hours after the incident.
The corpse was suspected to be that of the driver of the vehicle.
The divers had been combing the river to fish out the remains of other victims at press time on Thursday.
The vehicle, a BMW 3 SERIES, marked LAGOS AJ 956 FKJ, veered off its lane on the highway at 7:30pm on Tuesday and plunged into the river.
The scene was close to Beta Glass Plc, located less than five kilometres to Ughelli town, the headquarters of Ughelli North Local Government Area.
The number of persons in the ill-fated car be could not ascertained by the Federal Road Safety Commission as at Thursday.
Rescue operations were hampered by lack of logistics as the FRSC could not mobilise the requisite human and material resources for the exercise.
Some motorists, who were emotionally traumatised by the fate of the trapped victims of the accident, raised the N5,000 demanded by divers from the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Delta State , Mr. Oluwasusi Famoloni, confirmed the recovery of the vehicle in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday, adding that one body was recovered along with the car.
Famoloni said the sum of N16,200 was found with the deceased (names withheld), whose age he put at 41 years.
The FRSC boss said the divers were still combing the river in search of the bodies of other victims on Thursday afternoon under the watch of the officials of the commission.
