Fashola Releases N2bn For School Repairs

The Lagos State Government has released N2 billion as an urgent intervention for the rehabilitation of dilapidated public schools across the state.

The Lagos State Government has released N2 billion as an urgent intervention for the rehabilitation of dilapidated public schools across the state.

Deputy Governor of the state, Princess Sarah Sosan, disclosed this yesterday while on tour of some rehabilitated schools to inspect the work done so far.

Sosan said the N2 billion was released to tackle the immediate problems of these schools, such as mending fences, collapsed classrooms, provision of chairs and desks, among others.

She added that the N2 billion was not part of fund earmarked for major construction of schools in the state, but a capital vote earmarked for school rehabilitation and to ensure that the schools were put in good shape.

She, however, stated that the N403 billion budget of the state would not be enough to address the long time decay in the state's public schools.

'We have 1,000 primary schools and 600 secondary schools. No amount of money can be enough, not even the whole budget of the state to address the problems in our schools. This is why we call on corporate bodies to help the state government," she stated.

The deputy governor visited Ijesha Boys Senior High School, where some blocks of classrooms were rehabilitated and Sango Grammar School, where 90 dilapidated doors were replaced.

At Itire Community Senior Secondary School, Sosan lamented over the level of decay at the school, which had been taken over by flood, saying that one of the blocks in the school would be demolished to pave way for a prototype building.

'This school is faced with the challenge of flooding. I am not happy about the structures in this school. Children should not be learning in this kind of structure. We will redesign the school," she said.
